Why do nearly all diets fail?

Over and over again, diets fail. When they do succeed, studies find that 50% regain the lost weight in time! Self-respect takes a beating in the process. Shame and depression are common side effects. No government agency regulates dieting, and it might not even be possible. But if they did, statistics alone would ban diets from the market as bad medicine.

Nonetheless, diets are incredibly popular– so something doesn’t add up. How can a 60 billion dollar industry possibly be so completely off the mark? What’s missing in our understanding of weight gain, weight loss, dieting, and relapse? These are the questions that led us to form the Diet Project.

The Diet Project

We have studied and continue to document people of differing ages, sizes, backgrounds, and ethnicities. We look into personal history, desires, aversions, eating habits, and self-image. We have worked to understand them as they work to understand themselves more deeply. What we’ve learned from these women has been revolutionary.
